The skills we need for online customer engagement

One of the ways ASGA supports our members is by playing an active role on various advisory bodies and contributing our ideas to policies, laws and regulations that affect businesses in the active lifestyle and sports performance goods sector.

I’m very pleased to have been elected as the Deputy Chair of the Wholesale and Retail Industry Reference Committee, which advises the Federal Government about the Vocational Education and Training (VET) skills needs and training packages for the retail and wholesale industries in Australia.

I’ve also been appointed to a Cross-Sector Project: Consumer Engagement via Online & Social Media, which aims to better understand the skills and training needs of a range of stakeholders and industries in relation to consumer engagement via online and social media. In order to ensure retail and wholesale employees have the best skills and training possible, we want to understand:

  • Current and emerging trends in relation to consumer engagement via online and social media in your industry
  • Current and emerging demand for skills in this area and your industry’s skills shortage experiences
  • Areas of commonality where Training Package products could address skills needs across more than one industry sector
  • The benefits and implications of implementing standard units (applicable to all Training Packages) relating to online and social media engagement skills.

Online customer engagement is a growing area across the retail industry – nowhere more so than in the sporting and active lifestyle goods space. I’m aware of ASGA members in this area having difficulty finding qualified staff.
