In 2003 ASGA conducted a Sports Industry Survey, providing an opportunity for industry participants to communicate their view of the importance and relevance of a range of potential issues. Outcomes were established and some interesting points were raised. These were:
- Retailers and Non-retailers have a different view of the level of relevance of some issues, however with perhaps more shared issues than one might have assumed.
- Both groups rated 'competition with non sports-industry product' very lowly, despite this issue impacting on where discretionary spending takes place. If they are spending their money on mobile phones and computer games they are not spending it on sporting goods! This should be a key issue?
- Part of the function of ASGA should be focussing on the major shared and specific issues, taking into account any legal implications and the interests of its Members overall.
In 2006 the same Industry Survey was sent to ASGA Members, allowing a comparison to be made with the initial Survey.
The key findings and comparisons are as follows:
Key Shared Issues
- industry data
- participation trends
- staffing issues
ASGA action:
- ASGA to maintain their focus on providing relevant and up to date market intelligence, including retail data for athletic and leisure footwear and apparel and golf equipment.
- Foster industry growth and profile by supporting initiatives which promote active and healthy lifestyles for Australians.
- Keep abreast of any industrial relations issues specific to the sporting goods industry and report relevant information to Members
Specific Retailer Issues
- supplier retail and factory outlets
- retailers home brand products
ASGA action?
Whilst there would not be a role for the ASGA to take 'action' in these matters, they should be acknowledged as being an issue for some of our Members and we will be seeking to provide information learned from other markets or industries as a resource tool. Neither of these issues is unique to Australia, or sporting goods!
Specific Wholesaler issues
- counterfeit goods
- parallel importing
ASGA action?
ASGA has identified this as a massive issue for the entire sporting goods industry. ASGA has aligned themselves with relevant organisations so that we can update Members with pertinent information relating to these issues. See articles under “Publications” and Newsletter articles under “Topical Items” for information on internet retailing and counterfeit project updates.
